Sustainability is needed now more than ever. When we consider the word sustainability, we often think about clean energy or reducing carbon emission. Well, United Nations says it is much more than that. They set 17 goals that have to be achieved globally. The goals include:

- Partnerships to achieve the Goal
Most of these goals are achieved in developed countries like Canada, the USA. Developing countries (India, Brazil) and the least developed countries (Nepal, Bangladesh) are gradually achieving the targets set by the UN. Large corporations and companies have implementing PPP policies (Profit-People-Planet).
How can sustainable manufacturing be improved in developing countries?
1.Increasing Small-scale industries
Small is beautiful. Small and medium scale industries are the backbone of the manufacturing economy. Large corporations rely on MSMEs. Many designers and engineers rely on MSMEs to bring their product idea to reality. Also, it plays an important role in training the unskilled workforce because of the lack of industrial training facilities in developing countries. A new MSME owner is usually someone who worked in such companies earlier. MSME breeds MSME. Integration of MSME into the global value chain is crucial for rural development.
2.Encouraging youngsters
Computer technology boomed in the last two decades and the contribution of youngsters in the industry is what made it possible. Unlike the IT sector, Manufacturing sector failed to attract youngsters, and many manufacturing companies are struggling to find younger workforce. Many college students think that manufacturing is dull work. Hence it is much needed in developing countries to encourage youngsters to pursue a career in the manufacturing sector. Millennials look for meaningful jobs. Hence manufacturers needed to focus on solving problems and enhancing lives.
3.Industry 4.0
Manufacturers in developed countries have started adopting cyber systems which is a big leap towards sustainable development. Massive waste can be avoided by implementing Industry 4.0 technologies. Guiding the manufacturers to adopt 4.0 practices makes the industry more efficient and innovative. It also appeals to younger generations. Making technologies affordable to small-scale businesses is another important factor that needs to be taken into account.
